Radiologists Fear Universal Healthcare

More than half (52 percent) of radiologists responding to our 2008 radiologist salary survey said universal healthcare would negatively affect their personal incomes. Among almost 200 survey respondents, 39 percent indicated such a policy would have no effect on their earnings. Only 9 percent thought universal healthcare would affect their personal incomes positively.

Rural Versus Metro Physician Salaries

Physician research conducted by LocumTenens.com indicates that, on average, rural doctors' incomes don't differ significantly from those of their "big-city" colleagues. In fact, they often come out ahead in terms of real purchasing power.

Psychiatrists Make Salary Gains

LocumTenens.com’s 2008 survey data indicate that the average psychiatrist salary increased between 2006 and 2007. In fact, 60 percent of psychiatrists responding to the physician recruitment firm’s 2008 salary survey reported income gains between the preceding two years. Among those, 26 percent reported increases of 10 percent or more.

Women Physicians and Income Gaps

Women are expected to comprise 30% of the physician work force in less than 2 years. Yet, despite growing numbers of women in medicine, females consistently lag behind males in physician salaries. Many gender-based pay differences are explained by specialty choice, age or experience level, practice characteristics, and lifestyle choice. However, the AMA admits that gender bias and discrimination continue to exist in medicine.
